What an amazing morning of the Skechers Walk! The round-trip Pier to Pier walk consisted of a 3.4 mile trip from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier. Family, friends, children and even pets came out to enjoy the early morning walk The event was co-hosted by Hall of Famer baseball manager Tommy Lasorda, “Dancing With the Stars” co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet, fitness expert Denise Austin and Mayor Wayne Powell. More than 8500 participants came out and raising over $750,000 to the Friendship Circle.
The Friendship Circle, is a Non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of youth w/ special needs through 1-to-1 peer mentoring in homes, schools & community. One of my great passions is to help children with special needs get the intervention they deserve. I believe the Friendship Circle and their programs make a definite impact on the outcome of these children.
In addition, the entertainment of the walk was enhanced by the participation all the Volunteers, bands, Cheering Squads from the local schools that helped make this event so much fun. What an accomplishment it was to have so many young people and students realize the importance of this walk. There were not only refreshments for the people but also water bowl stations for our furry friendly pets who joined in on the walk!
Only four years since the inception of this walk and it has grown to be an iconic event here in the South Bay! Again should you ever have the chance, come out next year with your family, friends and pets to enjoy a morning walk for the benefit of children with special needs. Hope to see you next year!
